Kyle grew up here at First and served as part-time youth pastor during his undergrad. He’s excited to be able to return and lead the church into it’s next phase of service to Jesus. He lives in Mattawan with his beautiful wife, Nikki, and two youngest girls. His oldest daughter attends Calvin University in Grand Rapids. He has a Masters in International Development Administration from Western Michigan University and a Masters of Divinity from Moody Theological Seminary. He’s held multiple ministry positions in a variety of churches, led a non-profit mainly working in Uganda, and is a handyman and tree cutter. In his free time, you may find him on a bicycle (road or mountain), riding his old Harley, SUP’n with his wife, or messing around in his hobby wood/metal shop.

Steve Johnson

Congregational Care Pastor

After a nine year career as a police officer in Newaygo County, Michigan, Steve sensed the Lord’s call to church ministry. He served as pastor of a local church in Kalamazoo for 32 years until his retirement in 2019. He then became affiliated with Interim Ministries, assisting various churches in west Michigan. He served 2 ½ years as part-time interim at First Reformed until March of 2024. Steve then accepted the position of Pastor of Visitation and Congregational Care at First Reformed. His wife, Beth, grew up in a pastor’s home and helps in the children’s ministry at First. They have two daughters who are both employed in ministries at their respective churches, one in Byron Center, Michigan and the other in St. Joseph, Michigan. In addition to their daughters, the Johnson’s have seven grandchildren. Steve is a graduate of Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music, and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Cornerstone University as well as a Master’s degree in Ministry from Moody Theological Seminary.

Cindi Kirby

Cindi was born and raised in Portage and currently lives in Scotts, MI.  She has been the secretary here at FRCP since 2016.  She’s been married to Tim for 27 years and they have a 26 year old daughter.  Her hobbies are shopping, reading and watching the sports Tim coaches (Girls Varsity Basketball and Softball).  She loves her job and looks forward to what the future holds.

Jan Meyer

Worship Director

Jan was born in Kalamazoo and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and Western Michigan University with a degree in elementary education.  She married her husband, Bill, in 1966 and they have lived in Portage since 1967.  They treasure their time with daughter, Amy, son-in-law, David, and three grandsons.

Jan started her music career playing the piano at age 7, and has done a lot of accompanying through the years—for school musicals and choirs in Portage and Vicksburg, and for many vocal and instrumental soloists. She is also provides private lessons.

Jan started her musical career at First by playing for the choir, then eventually directing.  Later, she was made the Director of Music which has included the handbell choir, a children’s chime choir, a men’s ensemble and a women’s ensemble. Jan’s duties now involve playing piano for the church services and leading the Praise Team, and helping select music for worship.  She is grateful to God for the gift of music and to be able to use this gift as a way to glorify Him!

Hayden Axe

Hayden is a college student at Western Michigan University, where he’s studying finance and plans to graduate in the spring of 2026. He’s super excited to have the opportunity to work alongside some amazing people and help build a youth program that honors the Lord and points many to Jesus. He served at Miracle Camp for two summers, which is a Christian summer camp located in Lawton, Michigan. There he taught the gospel, built relationships with youth, and helped plan and run summer camp. Overall, he loves building genuine relationships and friendships with others that are built on the foundation of Christ. Plus, his favorite hobbies are sports, board games, and spending time outdoors.
