Portage Northern Bread Lift for Jenna Howard Memorial

Jenna Howard’s light continues to shine through the love of her friends, family and community. A close dance friend of Jenna’s proposed that this year’s Bread Lift fundraiser benefit the Pediatric Heart Transplant program at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital at the University of Michigan, where Jenna had been a patient. Here is information from the Portage Northern Huskie Tracks Newsletter:

“In 1966, a few dozen Portage Northern staff and students created a new tradition: On the Saturday before Thanksgiving, they would walk throughout the neighborhoods of Portage collecting donations for a local charity in exchange for a loaf of bread (you can’t have Thanksgiving without stuffing). That year, they collected $325. In the 58 years that followed, more than 10,000 Huskies have taken part in Breadlift, as it came to be known, and raised over $536,000. In 2015, Breadlift was so successful that it broke a record for raising the most funds in a single day for a charitable event by selling bread! This year we are dedicating Breadlift to Jenna Howard, a Portage Central student who lost her life last May. Our goal is to help families, like Jenna’s, by donating money toward this organization. The 2024 Breadlift campaign, “ROLL SKIES”, will step off with around 300 students on the streets of Portage between 9a-3p of Saturday, November 23, 2024. Donations can be made before Nov 23 in the Main Office of Portage Northern High School, M-F 7am-4pm (Cash/Check) or online (coming soon). The charity chosen this year is the Pediatric Heart Transplants at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. We are excited to help raise money that will help families LIVING with heart issues by helping donate to the University of Michigan Congenital Heart Center Pediatric Heart Transplant Program C.S Mott Children’s Hospital to help these families.”
